The medieval lake-side town of Zell am See is one of Austria's most appealing summer and winter resorts. Its huge international popularity rests on its hard-to-beat setting on the shore of a beautiful lake at the foot of the 2,000-m Schmittenhöhe.
You'll be staying at the 3+ star Hotel Steinerwirt situated in the centre of town and a short walk away from the famous Zell lake and the many shops, bars and restaurants. All rooms come complete with en suite bathrooms and tvs. The staff are particularly friendly at Steinerwirt and will help make you feel welcome. The hotel also offers a high standard of food with traditional Austrian dishes as well as food from around the World. Free internet is available in every room and each room has a hairdryer.
The 500 year old Steinerwirt was recently renovated as a contemporary hotel with some really nice touches. The hotel doubles up as a gallery with amazing art displayed throughout (many of the paintings are available for sale). There's also a library on the 1st floor and a great chill out living room called the 'Think Tank' where you can lounge on comfortable chairs or couches and read. A large roof terrace is open for any one to relax and view the surrounding lakes and mountains. The hotel restaurant not only provides a great standard of cuisine, it also has a public terrace for an end of day coffee overlooking the town centre. Quite simply, we love this hotel and it's no surprise that it features in the book and website '500 Very Special Hotels' as well as the Michelin Austria Guide.
From the hotel you can walk to the spectacular lake in less than a few minutes. The foot of the Schmittenhöhe mountain is also just a two minute walk from the hotel where you can take the City Express gondola straight up the mountain or alternatively take a bus from across the road to the new Trans-Express gondola which goes straight to the top.
Outside of skiing time, Zell is a great place to explore with a large leisure centre, health centre and ice rink close to the hotel. The nightlife is particularly good with a selection of classy bars such as Hangar B17 and Crazy Daisies as well as some more lively bars like Flanigans with live music and bar sports.
The Kitzsteinhorn glacier is only a 25 minute bus ride away with lots more slopes and guaranteed snow and as one of the highest points in Austria has some great views across the alps.
Schmittenhoe has 75km of runs equally split between beginner, intermediate and advanced with welcoming mountain restaurants and bars wherever you look.
Schmittenhöhe is ideal for all levels of ability with a good selection of black and cross country runs leading down to the village and 2 nursery areas for absolute beginners. |
