| Students track dolphins in Newquay |
Tuesday 29 May 2007 |
Bottle-nosed dolphins have been tracked in the sea near Newquay by a group of students from a Welsh college.
The students, from Coleg Gwent's Usk Campus, visited Cardigan Bay in Newquay last week to monitor seven dolphins using GPS systems as part of a project for their national diplomas in animal management and HNC/HNDs in animal studies, the Western Mail reports.
Each dolphin was photographed for future reference, because the individual markings on their dorsal fins mean that the students will be able to identify them in the future.
Animal studies lecturer, Ghislaine Fossey, who organised the visit, said: "This has been an invaluable experience for the students, who have realised how difficult it is to photograph a wild bottlenose dolphin travelling at speed.
"It has also developed their knowledge in the monitoring of marine mammals."
Newquay is one of the UK's most popular coastal towns, and is a perfect place to visit for a relaxing holiday, an activity break, and even to study wildlife!
