| Practice map-reading in the Brecon Beacons |
Friday 25 May 2007 |
One of the most beautiful tourism hotspots in Wales is the best place to practice orienteering, according to the Western Mail.
Noting that it is essential for people to "go out and practice" to improve their map-reading skills, the paper has dubbed the Brecon Beacons National Park "a great classroom".
Several spots in the park are recommended for map-readers, including the area around Crickhowell village, the perched bog of Waun Ddu and the Black Mountains.
The correspondent also notes that the "most challenging [areas] in terms of navigation ? are the high moors which are split into two distinct parts by the stunning mountain road between the 'Heads of the Valleys' road near Ebbw Vale and the small village of Llangynidr.
"To the east of the road is the boggy Llangattock Mountain with [the] spooky 'Witches Pool' and Bronze Age burial cairns. To the west lie the wild heather and winberry moors of Llangynidr Moors, largely featureless apart from hundreds of crater-like depressions called 'shakeholes'."
Revitalise yourself with a fun activity break.
