Opera to be staged in Prague Thursday 26 April 2007

A Czechoslovakian filmmaker who has lived in the US since 1968 has returned to his home country to stage an opera.

Academy award winner Milos Forman was first involved with the jazz opera A Walk Worthwhile when he transformed it into a film for TV in 1966, the Miami Herald reports.

Now, with the help of his two sons, Forman is involved with the opera once more, as it is being performed at the Czech National Theatre in the delightful city of Prague.

Speaking to a news conference this week, the 75-year-old said: "I never did an opera on a stage. Filmmaking is a piece of cake compared to theatre."

Forman won Academy Awards for his work on the 1975 film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and the 1984 film Amadeus. His other screen credits include The People vs Larry Flynt and Man on the Moon.

A Walk Worthwhile was written by Czech authors Jiri Suchy and Jiri Slitr and dates from the 1960s when it had a run of 64 performances at the pair's own theatre, Semafor.

The first night at the National Theatre is scheduled for April 22nd 2007, great news for any Opera fans heading to the Czech capital for a city break.
