| May Day messing around on the river |
Wednesday 09 May 2007 |
Messing around on the river may be a summer tradition, but messing around on Magdelen bridge is not, according to authorities in Oxford.
People in the university town have been banned from jumping off Magdalen bridge ? even though some claim it is tradition observed annually on May morning.
Yesterday hundreds of revellers gathered in the streets to celebrate may morning and a number jumped off Magdelen bridge and into water only 60 centimetres deep despite the ban.
Mark Blandford Baker, Home Bursar at Magdalen College, said: "People often say that jumping off Magdalen Bridge on May Morning is a tradition. This is nonsense. It only started happening in the 1960s or 1970s."
Councillor John Goddard, Leader of Oxford City Council, added: "I hope that the ancient tradition of not jumping off the bridge will be revived."
Last year people sustaining injuries from jumping off the bridge put a strain on rescue services, according to reports.
For those intending to celebrate the coming of May in a milder manner at the weekend, a day messing around on the river may be a good option.
Many will take to the river Cherwell in Oxford's flat-bottomed punt boats ? which are available for hire at a cost of £10 per hour.
