Lose yourself in the wonders of Marrakech Tuesday 01 May 2007

Marrakech is a perfect place to 'get lost' for a weekend, according to the travel section of the Belfast Telegraph.

Writer Harriet O'Brien spent a weekend in the Moroccan town, and concluded that it is the "perfect mixture of ancient and modern" where losing yourself is "all part of the fun".

O'Brien suggests spring as the best time to pay a visit to Marrakech, when the weather is fine and there aren't too many other tourists around. Getting your bearings is a good idea before any attempt is made to tackle the "map-defying labyrinth of medieval-like alleyways."

The municipality itself is surrounded by the red walls of the median, which are approximately 1,000 years old and cover a total distance of 10km. The plethora of bazaars which are situated throughout the town are always worth a visit, as are the narrow lanes they occupy.

Stalls sell a myriad of items including spices, pottery, woodcraft and baboush, traditional slipper-like shoes, and as O'Brien notes while walking through them "you'll feel as if you've walked back in time".

"The densely packed alleyways bustle with donkey carts, traders with barrows, pedestrians - and motorised bicycles. Attempting to follow a map is pointless, just go with the flow," she adds.
