| London to host UK cycling competition |
Wednesday 02 May 2007 |
Avid cyclists will be pleased to hear that London is to host the start of the Tour of Britain, the UK's biggest cycle race.
The race will start in Crystal Palace Park on Sunday 9th September and competitors will tackle a six stage route covering 800kms before reaching the finishing point in Glasgow on Sunday 16th September.
Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, said: "This important national event will further showcase London's ability to promote a world-class sporting fixture to a global audience.
"The Tour of Britain will be a fantastic spectacle and a fun day out. It will help to highlight the health benefits and enjoyment that cycling can offer Londoners and will illustrate the first rate facilities and experiences that London has for all tourists and visitors."
Cycle journeys on major roads in London have increased by 72 per cent since 2000, and it is estimated that 450,000 cycle journeys are made everyday across the capital. Cycling in and around London is not only good exercise but it is also enjoyable, particularly in areas such as East London and the Docks, and Richmond Park.
