| London a city of cyclists |
Wednesday 09 May 2007 |
A significant rise in the number of bikes users in the capital has made London a city of cyclists.
Mayor of London Ken Livingstone revealed that the number of cyclists in the city has risen by 83 per cent in the last seven years.
Half a million journeys are now made in by bike every day in the capital, according to figures from Transport for London.
Mr Livingstone launched a television advertising campaign, "You're better off by bike", to encourage more people to get a hold of their handle bars.
"London is experiencing a cycling renaissance," the mayor said.
"We can now justifiably call ourselves a cycling city, a proposal that would have seemed ridiculous just six years ago," he added.
Those enjoying a London short break this summer will be interested to learn that, from April through to September, cycle hire is available at Richmond Park ? in the car park near Roehampton Gate.
The Tour de France is arriving in the city for the first time in July.
