Gastronomic delights in Italy Tuesday 22 May 2007

Any holidaymaker who has been fortunate enough to visit the delightful European country of Italy for a short break will more than likely have come back having experienced a plethora of gastronomic wonders.

The Italians are renowned for their exquisite food and drink, particularly their pizza, pasta, olives, wine and coffee. Indeed, a Mediterranean diet, rich in fish, fruit, whole grains and vegetables, has long been regarded as a healthy eating option by many.

This theory received extra leverage recently after a study published in the journal Thorax suggested that men's chances of suffering from progressive lung diseases such as emphysema and bronchitis can be reduced if they eat a Mediterranean diet.

But health benefits aside, Italian cuisine is ultimately a joy to the palate. So, as the days are getting warmer, and with another bank holiday weekend in the not too distant future, now is the perfect time to pay Italy a visit and sample the sumptuous culinary delights.

One area that makes for a particularly excellent food experience is the Friuli Venezia Giulia region on the north-east coast of the country. An area seeped in history, influenced by Celts, Romans, Longobards, the Republic of Venice and the Hapsburgs, it is simply a superb place to sample excellent quality food and wine.

The city of Trieste is a lively place to stay in the region, and is full of shops, cafes, restaurants and other numerous eateries to get your taste buds tingling, while Cividale del Friuli is a top spot for enjoying locally produced wines accompanied by delicious cheeses and cold cuts.

There are also numerous excursions and activities (not all food related, sadly!) which can be enjoyed, including a visit to Miramare Castle, which will ensure there is never a dull moment during a visit to Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Another top spot for a trip packed with taste sensations is the Amalfi Coast. Here you can enjoy spectacular coastal views, take time to wander round picturesque fishing villages, visit historic and cultural sights and, best of all, try the local dishes!

Sorrento, overlooking the beautiful Bay of Naples, is a busy tourist town and one which offers a huge variety of restaurants. On a trip with Speed Breaks, you can even make a visit to a local farm, learn how to make a proper Italian pizza and see how the pros make Neapolitan mozzarella.

And of course, any holidaymaker spending time on the Amalfi Coast should definitely be sure to see Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius, the former a village frozen in time by the ash which fell after the eruption of the latter in AD 79.

So, with your mouth watering at the thought of some delicious Italian pasta served with some crisp white wine, why not take advantage of the great deals available with Speed Breaks!
