| Famous Lake District house sells for £470,000 |
Friday 27 April 2007 |
Rigg Beck, the Lake District's famous 'purple' house, has been sold for nearly half a million pounds.
The property was bought at an auction by management consultant Charles Carter from Kingston-upon-Thames in Surrey for £470,000, the Cumberland News Reports.
It was previously owned by Mrs Varya Vergauwen, who rented rooms in her home to actors who were appearing in shows at the local theatre. The house has also welcomed various celebrity guests including Bob Hoskins, Tom Courtenay and poet laureate Ted Hughes.
Mr Carter told the paper: "We have been looking for something to develop for a number of years. It didn't have to be in the Lake District, but we know the area well and this property came up on the market.
"It will take a year or two to develop. The literary connections are interesting and it's a house with history."
The Lake District is a wonderful place to have a home thanks to its beautiful scenery and interesting heritage, and it is also a wonderful place to embark on an activity break.
