Excitement over Lake District Osprey Wednesday 09 May 2007

There has been excitement in the Lake District following the appearance of the national park's most famous Osprey.

Fish King arrived at Bassenthwaite last week ? although Green XS, the female with whom he has raised seven chicks, has yet to appear.

Experts believe she may have been blighted by poor weather and northerly winds on her return journey from Africa.

However it seems Fish King may not be feeling too miserable in her absence: a hidden camera has revealed the arrival of a new female in the nest.

It is now hoped that Green XS may return and begin a second Osprey family in the region.

Around 500,000 people have visited viewpoints in the Bassenthwaite area to catch a glimpse of Fish King and his activities.

For those who are not skilled in bird watching, a giant screen at Whinlatter Forest Visitor Centre displays live images from the nest camera.

The Lake District is a perennial favourite for holiday makers. Its landscape of lakes and fells make it a superb destination for activity holidays, adventure holidays and single weekend breaks.
