| Cutty Sark severely damaged by fire |
Monday 28 May 2007 |
A blaze swept through the Cutty Sark in the early hours of this morning (May 21st) following a suspected arson attack.
One of the top tourist attractions in Greenwich, the 19th century ship is the worlds only remaining tea clipper. The fire struck as the 138-year-old vessel sat in its dry dock at William Wark in Greenwich, south London.
The Cutty Sark was originally used to deliver tea from China and at the time of the fire was closed to visitors because it was undergoing a £25 million restoration project due to be completed in 2009.
A total of eight fire engines and 40 firefighters battled against the flames and local residents were evacuated for their own safety.
Richard Doughty, chief executive of the charitable Cutty Sark Trust, told the BBC: "What is special about Cutty Sark is the timbers, the iron frames that went to the South China Seas, and to think that that is threatened in any way is unbelievable, it's an unimaginable shock."
The Cutty Sark is one of the most distinctive features of the area, which is a great place to visit if you want to take in the history of the capital, particularly by cycling around east London and the Docks.
