Climate change threatens Snowdonia's wildlife Thursday 03 May 2007

A rise in global warming could prove harmful to Snowdonia, one of Britain's most beautiful natural spots.

David Lewis, chairman of the Snowdonia Society's policy committee, has warned that despite the fact increasing temperatures may encourage tourism in the area, the effect on plants and animals will be detrimental, the Western Mail reports.

Mr Lewis told the paper: "One reason why Snowdonia will be particularly badly affected is because of its distinctive plants.

"Areas like Harlech, which has an expanse of low-lying sand dunes, could disappear entirely due to rising sea-levels.

"It threatens some of the most iconic plant life and natural attractions of North West Wales."

Bangor University's Gruffudd Edwards added: "The evidence [for global warming] is overwhelming so we have to assume it's true just in case.

"We cannot just sit back and do nothing."

Snowdonia National Park is located in northern Wales and is home to Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales. The park attracts approximately six million visitors a year, who are drawn by the beautiful scenery and endless opportunities to indulge in outdoor activities such as mountain climbing or walking.

For those wish to stay in the area, the charming Cobdens Hotel is situated only a couple of miles from Snowdon in Capel Curig.

Revitalise yourself with a fun activity break.
