Brits warned to stay cool on holiday Wednesday 23 May 2007

British holidaymakers have been advised to properly protect themselves from the effects of the sun following the results of a recent survey.

According to a survey by Cancer Research UK, 37 per cent of female Brits and 25 per cent of male Brits have felt unattractive while on holiday because they have been over-exposed to the sun.

Moreover, one in three travellers from the UK have been so sunburnt that they couldn't wear certain clothes, while half have been unable to lie on their backs.

Rebecca Russell, Cancer Research UK's SunSmart campaign manager, said: "Sunburn can seriously increase your risk of skin cancer, which is why it is so important to be careful in the sun and take care not to burn.

"Exposure to the sun on summer holidays can be particularly dangerous as it often takes place in intense and infrequent bursts.

"Some people are more likely than others to get skin cancer. They tend to have one or more of the following: fair skin, red or fair hair, lots of moles or freckles, a family history of skin cancer or experience of sunburn in the past."

Of the 2,000 respondents to the survey, just 22 per cent said they had never been sunburnt.
