| A simulated tour of Ancient Egypt? |
Wednesday 23 May 2007 |
A team of researchers is assessing whether or not ancient historical sites can be recreated using 3D computer technology.
The aim of the project is to dramatically improve replicas of ancient sites such as churches and palaces. The project is focusing on the Byzantine period, and hopes to allow people to glean a better understanding of cultures such as the Ancient Egyptians.
Developments in display technology are being explored, as are the effects of smoke, dust, fog and interior lighting conditions.
The project is being carried out by researchers from the Warwick Manufacturing Group and the University of Warwick, and project leader Professor Alan Chalmers said: "We're trying to produce images that show more realistically the actual conditions of the time we're looking back at. Our work may lead to a significant new tool that could help put us in closer touch with the past."
However, until the work is completed, the closest any of us can come to exploring the past is by visiting the countries where ancient civilisations once lived. Egypt is a fantastically interesting destination, full of historical and cultural sights, not to mention endless opportunities to take part in fun activities, such as diving.
If you want to 'walk like an Egyptian', then book a visit to the gorgeous Red Sea destination Sharm el Sheik with Speed Breaks.
Make a splash with a diving break.
