| Activity holidays increasingly popular |
Thursday 24 May 2007 |
The popularity of activity breaks is soaring, according to a new survey.
Research conducted by Travelzest and the Centre of Future Studies has revealed that more and more travellers are opting for holidays where they can indulge in fun activities, learn new skills or even be eco-friendly over traditional package trips.
The figures from the study show that in the four years from 2002 to 2006, the number of package holiday bookings fell by 8.9 per cent.
Chris Mottershead, Travelzest chief executive, said: "We're moving away from a mass market culture to one of unlimited choice. Through the internet, reaching small and specialist markets is now economical.
"The biggest growth sectors are in specialist breaks such as activity, health and spa, nature and wildlife trips, and escorted tours such as opera, cycling trips, dance, cooking or wine-tasting."
"We are seeing much more sophisticated and confident travellers who care about the world around them and want authentic travel experiences," added Dr Frank Shaw, of the Centre of Future Studies.
"Both men and women are putting a high emphasis on 'me time' and are looking to blend hobbies with their holidaymaking," he said.
Revitalise yourself with a fun activity break.
