Wirksworth - History, Heritage and Hilltop views!

This walk is packed with interest, history and a few surprises that will take your breath away!

We start the walk in Cromford which is said to be the home of the Industrial Revolution. Here Sir Richard Arkwright built the first successful water powered cotton mill back in 1771 which was the start of his mill owning empire and vast wealth. From the car park we will follow a path beside Cromford Canal to High Peak Junction and the start of the High Peak Trail. After walking part way up the steep Cromford Incline we proceed along Intake Lane which is a lovely paved old path before walking up through the woods to Black Rocks from where the views are stupendous (on a clear day!). Our route now takes us through fields, stiles and old paths to Wirksworth which is a quaint market town tucked away in the hills with plenty of Victorian and Georgian architecture to observe as well as narrow ginnels, alleyways and paths to follow. Here we will have a scrumptious hot buffet at Crown Yard Kitchen at approximately 1pm which is next to Wirksworth Heritage Centre.

After lunch we follow winding paths through higgedly-piggedly cottages to a new path through the disused Middle Peak Quarry then further fields and stiles to Middleton Top on the High Peak Trail. We are now high on the hilltops with far reaching views of Derbyshire and the route from here is all downhill! After passing historic landmarks and fascinating features we are going to drop down the hillside to Cromford for a walk past the mill pond, arms houses, old lock up and the remains of Cromford Sough.

The walk ends back at Cromford Mill at about 4pm where we might be in time to get a pot of tea at the tea rooms before departing for home.

This is a moderatly strenuous walk of about 9 miles with a few steep hills to go up/down.
