Join us on the historic Blue Cruise sailing around the Gulf of Fethiye, South West Turkey in two traditional Gulets. These are recreational sailing boats (no work required) with larger cabins than traditional sailing yachts and lots more space generally. You'll have your own crew on each boat taking care of the route planning, sailing, cooking and cleaning!
You'll be sailing part of the historical Blue Cruise which runs between Bodrum and Antalya. Beginning in Dalaman you'll set sail from Gocek along the coast passing islands and marinas including Marmaris, Dalyan and the Yassica Islands. Beaches on route are plentiful and even in October the weather is generally hot and the swimming conditions ideal.
What is a Gulet?
A Gulet is a traditional design of a two-masted wooden sailing vessel from the south-west coast of Turkey, although frequently found all around the eastern Mediterranean. Whilst traditionally these vessels were used for wind sailing, they are now mostly diesel powered. This is a recreational boat and it is unlikely you will gain any sailing skills. Gulets have lots more space on them than sailing yachts which means there is room for everyone to eat together at dinner and lots of sun mats above deck.
The Route
Based on the weather conditions it is always at the discretion of the skipper which route is taken but expect the following withing the itinerary.
Göcek
Göcek is the ideal starting point with great bars and cafes, seafood and a grocers to stock up on drinks. Göcek is also the gateway to the islands on the Gulf of Fethiye.
Dalyan
Dalyan is the home of Iztuzu Beach, a breeding ground for the endangered loggerhead sea turtle species. Better still the Gerders Ice-cream bar in the town centre is owned by none other than the David Hasselhoff, who can sometimes be found on site!
Marmaris
The ancient port city of Marmaris is home to one of the oldest castles in the World. This is the place to go for a traditional Turkish bath (hamam) and foam massage followed by a night out with Cossack dancing, belly dancing and all things Turkish. The shops here are also as Turkish as you can get selling carpets and Turkish Delight. Marmaris is also just a couple of miles sail to Rhodes.
Islands
The Yassica Islands are a group of very small and unspoilt islands. You'll be visiting many of them. It's likely you'll stay overnight on the Tersane Island which was a boatyard during Ottoman times. Then it's off to Manatir Bay also known as Cleopatra baths, the underwater ruins of a 2000 year old Hamam.
This is a wonderful opportunity to follow in the steps of Jason (of the Argonauts), Icarus and Alexander the Great.
