The Kitzsteinhorn glacier, in the Austrian Alps, is a popular resort for skiers from around the world. Rising to 3,203m (10,560 feet), the mountain peak provides all year round skiing and one of the widest selections of high altitude pistes in Austria. So you can rest assured you’ll have great ski conditions and guaranteed snow! The glacier is suitable for all levels of skier.
Kaprun is a beautiful village at the foot of the glacier just one hours transfer from Salzburg. The 4 star Hotel Orgler is in the centre of town right opposite the main shopping centre and bars and restaurants. The ski hire shop is also just across the road.
Orgler is one of the finest hotels in the area offering superb food, spacious rooms and a very relaxing sauna and whirlpool. The hotel offers large buffet breakfasts and also has a comfortable bar area to meet in before and after dinner. You can often enjoy the occasional traditional folk group while dining.
A regular free skibus runs from outside the hotel taking ten minutes to the foot of the glacier. A short gondola ride takes you up the first two levels: Langwied (2000m) and the Alpine Centre (2500m). from the Alpine Centre you have a choice of lifts and runs including a cable car that takes you to the top of the glacier.
If the snow is good, there might be a chance to ski the neighbouring Schmittenhohe overlooking the beautiful Lake Zell. Whatever the case, skiing is guaranteed and Kaprun has proved a perfect SpeedBreaks early and late snow resort for the last few years.
Places to enjoy in Kaprun include a state of the art wellness centre and a bowling alley all within a couple of minutes walk. Local clubs include the legendary late night Baum Bar as well as some charming wine bars. |
