THE ASHFORD WALK
Ashford-in-the Water is one of the Peak District's prettiest villages with chocolate box cottages and an ancient sheepwash bridge. The walk starts in the deep wooded gorge beside the river Wye from where we will ascend Deep Dale to the limestone plateau of the White Peak, crossing fields and stiles to the village of Sheldon where we will make a detour to see the remains of Magpie Mine which was one of Derbyshire's richest lead mines.
We then walk along quiet country lanes and descend a lovely old path with aerial views down over the valley, arriving at Ashford where after a little tour of the village we call in at the Ashford Arms Hotel for lunch. Afterwards, the walk back to the car park is on a fabulous riverside path passing old mills and soughs and walking on a narrow path through ancient woodland.
